Tony Caher is one of the most well-known advocates in Northern Ireland. He has been a Senior Partner in the firm of Campbell and Caher Solicitors, Lisburn and Belfast, Northern Ireland since 1979. He broadcasts regularly on current affairs and consumer issues.
Tony is a former Council member of the Law Society of Northern Ireland and the Civil Justice Review Committee. He is now the Chair of the Contentious Business Committee. He serves on various statutory bodies including the Supreme Court Rules Committee (of which he is currently the Law Society of Northern Ireland’s nominated member), and the Queen’s Counsel Appointments Committee. He also advises the General Consumer Council of Northern Ireland.
From 1999 to 2009, he was Chair of the Law Society of Northern Ireland’s Advocacy Working Party. A highly-regarded advocacy training course, which he and Fiona Donnelly created, has gained statutory recognition as the basis of qualification for Solicitor Advocates in Northern Ireland. Its template has been adopted by the solicitors’ profession in the Republic of Ireland and Scotland.
Tony also teaches at the Institute of Professional Legal Studies, Queen’s University Belfast. This institution is responsible for the post-graduate legal training of Bar students and pupil solicitors in Northern Ireland. Tony teaches advocacy in Ireland and Scotland and to non-professional groups such as trade unions.
Tony has been a regular faculty member on National Institute for Trial Advocacy courses in Boston, USA and has taught arbitration advocacy for Linklaters in Vienna.
